The Conception of 1967

The Black American Heritage Flag was first officially displayed at a community ceremony in Newark, New Jersey, in 1967. This occurred at the height of the Civil Rights movement, a crucial era marked by the struggle for equality, self-determination, and cultural identity.

Charles and Jackson travel-toured schools, churches, and civic assemblies across the nation, carrying the flag as an educational visual aid to teach ancestral contribution, citizenship, and historical appreciation.

By establishing this emblem, they provided a bridge connecting the past to the future—ensuring that the achievements of Black scientists, authors, builders, and everyday citizens would never be erased from the collective American story.
